The Blue Note 7

Blue Note lable 70 years anniversary tour

@ Boulder Theatre, Colorado, January 17, 2009

The recreation of Art work. Many of original Blue Note musicans are gone but their music still alive. We enjoy LPs or now remastered CDs and they sound fresh. Now days, current musicians carry those style and write new songs, arrange different type of music or play old songs with twist. What comes to artists mind is " We live in these days. Our works have to express what's going on now." sort of dilemma. These new generation of selected Blue Note artists have proven " true music lives forenver" with respect to oldies and their talent. Their fine work reminded me of the work cleaning Michelangelo's art work on Sistien Chapell. What impressed me was not just music. The stage presentation - almost uniform like suits they wore, position on stage, specially horn section, Wilson, Payton and Coltrane standing with good posture - again reminded me of old video of Lee Morgan, Art Blakey etc. I've seen on Youtube.

Peter Bernstein on guitar

Steve Wilson on alt sax and flute

The audience was amazing. I was lucky to be a part of them. I am so thankful to KUVO to give tickets away and I got a pair of them. It seemed like majority of audience were listner of KUVO and I heard converstion about recent programing change and many of miss Rodney as I do. Plus Ed's educationl program, in less than a year, I got ears (back... I have had BlueNote re-issued LPs) to appreciate these music

The Huge responce from audience, Ravi Coltrane said "Wow, you are the best!" , a guy sitting next to me said "Ha! They must say that in every city." That's exactly I thought but we found out it was serous comment. "We want to stay here for the rest of tour." " Yeah, do that." " We want to play all the songs in Blue Note catlog but even we saty all night, we cannot cover them..so, we pick..." They named artist of the song they would play, the audience went " woooh", Ravi said, " This is great!! like the other city we played before here, I said Wayne Shorter, they were like 'ha?'.."

Lewis Nash's druming was the most favorite of the night for me. He clealy played old fashion Blue Note style of drumming. I could've listen to just him playing. Plus in his solo, very fast base drum sounded almost like double base drums, reminded me of Cozy Powell, the one played with Jeff Beck.

Bill Charlap on piano. comes to solo, he knows how to show off. Besides sound, his action gives excitement to live show. I was impressed with mixer, too. Ovbiously, the volume of piano was turned up for his solo. I don't know if th mixer person was goes around with the band or belongs to Boulder theatre, it was very clear.

I have heard Nicholas Payton's songs and name before the show, to see him in live was exciting. He never breaks good posture all way through the concert.
Peter Washington on base. So classy sound.

The video should be loaded and start playing in a while.

I often bring flowers to the conert. Usually, I get a bunch of flowes and put them in a vase but this one is all musicians together. I still wanted to give them floweres so, I wrapped each stem.

front of Boulder theatre. While we were standing to wait the door to be opened. Wendy and Marc got there, too.

Steve Stalzle is part time KUVO DJ and he was covering Carlos' hour for the week of this show. I heard him saying, " we have 5 pair of tickets to Blue Note 7..." I called in. The phone was ringing and he picked up the line. He said "you got it." and took my information. OK, then, I started thinking "how am I gonna get up there? My car's not going to make it up..." I checked my daughter but she's not going to loan their car. Next day, I called Steve in the studio and asked " you gave me tickets yesterday. Are you going to that concert?" "I'm not sure.." "do you have a car? Can you take me?" I sent e-mail to the studio with my home page and KUVO page. He was able to open the e-mail. " Ah, I see you with Richie Cole.." Later, he said " I asked people at KUVO about you and everyone knows you. Looks like I was only one didn't know you." Plus he was found to be the person like to take picture, get autographs of musicians, too.

He got lots of nice pictures at this concert.

Also, Steve said "Hi, Nome." to the gentlman front of us. Noman Provizer of Rocky Moutain News music commentor was front of us.

They were not going to come out for the meet and greet. So, what am I going to do with these a bucket of roses? The security didn't let me see them. The tour manager was not going to let me, either. Then, Peter, the guitar guy came back to the stage to get something.
I said " I got flower for you." Peter said "hmmm. come around the door." I said security "he said I can come and give them flowers." "did he said that? Well.. let me make sure...yeah, OK, come in." Then, I got to go in to the dressing room.
Steve is the person who can talk and get paid. " Hi, I'm steve. I work for KUVO and this is Yoshiko. She wants to give you the flower and get picture taken with you." I was speachless but happy to meet those musicians in person.
Steve Wilson, alt sax
Lewis Nash, drums
Peter Wachington, base

Nicholas Payton, trumpet

I said "I heard you had an accident..." "It was long time ago. Did I sound like that?" he said a little unhappy. "oh, no. you sounded great. I couldn't tell anything about it." "That's good."

Peter Bernstein, guitar

He was the one got us meet everyone but he wasn't found downstar with other band members. I and Steve gave up and went upstair to leave. He found us. I gave him a flower, got picture taken and autograph.

Ravi Coltrane

Steve went to his show so, he said hi. Ravi was friendly, when I gave him a flower, he kissed me on my cheek. I said "Steve, you missed it. Can you do it again?" Not kiss again but happy picture. When he was signing on CD, he said "you are not going to put this on e-bay, are you?"
